Dr. David Brownstein MD, author of “Salt Your Way to Health” takes great care to distinguish refined salt from unrefined salt. Unrefined salt is natural and unchanged from the state it was found in. It contains roughly 82 essential minerals. Unrefined salt is either sea salt or mined salt that is left in its natural state. Refined salt is simply natural salt that has been stripped of all of its minerals, except for sodium and chloride. Iodine is added to refined salt in the attempt to prevent thyroid disorders; however, iodine is not added in a quantity adequate enough to realistically prevent any illnesses.
Dr. Brownstein discusses that refined salt is of no use to the body and may contribute to some health conditions (i.e. heart disease and high blood pressure). Yet, unrefined salt is not only essential to the body, but can greatly improve overall health.
Unrefined salt has been shown to raise the Ph of the body to a healthier level; whereas, refined salt actually lowers the body’s Ph level; a lower Ph is associated with cancers and chronic illnesses. Unrefined salt may actually help to lower blood pressure; this is due to the many other essential minerals it contains, including magnesium and potassium. Unrefined salt may help regulate hormone levels, as well as, adrenal, renal, and thyroid function. It can also facilitate detoxification of the many harmful chemicals in the body. Furthermore, it is important in the breakdown of plant carbohydrates into something humans can use as food. It is the single element required for this process. Only when it is added, can saliva and gastric secretions breakdown the fiber in the carbohydrates. Unrefined salt also allows liquids to flow freely across the membranes of the human body. Refined salt does not allow this to happen. When fluids cannot pass freely, swelling may occur. This causes problems with joints and the kidneys.
Other benefits of unrefined salt may include: helping with adrenal exhaustion, allergic rhinitis, asthma, poor circulation, diabetes, dry skin, fatigue, gastritis, insect bites, bee stings, insomnia, muscle cramps, osteoporosis, and poison ivy.
